How NYC is Using Analytics to Keep New Yorkers Safe
Amen Ra Mashariki, Chief Analytics Officer for New York City and the Director of the Mayor’s Office of Data Analytics (MODA)
One of the Government's major purposes is to ensure the safety and well being of its citizens. This discussion will cover how the Mayor's Office of Data Analytics (MODA) uses citywide data and analytics to identify likely cases of tenant harassment throughout NYC. We will also discuss the case study in which MODA used machine learning in order to help lead a coordinated citywide response to the Legionnaires outbreak during the summer of 2015. This will also include discussion about how we have built a one of a kind data sharing platform and process in NYC in order to be prepared for emergency situations like snow storms or hurricanes.
Dr. Mashariki began his career as a software engineer at Motorola, then worked as a Computer Scientist and Research Faculty at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. In 2012 he was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as a White House Fellow. After his year as a White House Fellow, Dr. Mashariki was appointed as the first Chief Technology Officer for the Office of Personnel Management in the federal government.
