Blog Bytes: Campus Guide from the Desk of a DSAN Student

Patricia Schenfeld Byline and BitMoji

With DC as our campus, there are so many amazing things to explore and experience. Georgetown University offers several fun and exciting social opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate students to enjoy. Through this article I will discuss some of my favorite study spots, food recommendations, and activities, either in or around the Georgetown campus.

Study Spots

As a graduate student who lives off-campus in Arlington, my all-time favorite study spot is Kaldi’s Social House in Clarendon. Not only are the food and drinks delicious, but the ambiance is great for getting work done. Nearly all of the customers are there for the co-working environment. A close second would be Three Whistles, also in Clarendon.

If you’re looking for a quieter study space, the Graduate Student Lounges on the 2nd and 4th floor of Car Barn (room 220 and 410)  is great for getting work done before/after class.

Georgetown Orgs/Events

As a graduate student there are still plenty of ways to be involved on campus. The McDonough School of Business offers over 40 student-led graduate clubs, ranging from academic to special interest. Most, if not all, of these clubs are NOT exclusive to MSB students. I personally have joined a few of them as a student in GSAS!

GradGov is the student representation group for graduate students. They do elections each year for new representatives from each academic degree program. GradGov also puts on events for students, such as their annual GradGov Gala, which takes place in a beautiful off-campus banquet hall and is a formal event for all graduate students (and their +1s!).

The Georgetown Programming Board offers fun and affordable events for students throughout the year, including movie night, casino night, free food, battle of the bands, and more! I would highly recommend following them on Instagram to keep up with any upcoming events.

There is also a new student-led group started by DSAN students called GU Women in Data with membership open to all female-identifying grad students interested in pursuing or advancing careers in the data science field. We will focus on events (brown-bag sessions, career-focused events), women-centered social gatherings, and collaborative study sessions throughout the semester. You can follow them on Instagram and sign up for their listserv to stay up to date!

One of my favorite Georgetown events is the GU Farmers Market. This takes place in the Red Square where they have a variety of local food vendors. Follow them on Instagram to stay informed of their schedule!

Food Recs

Yellow is an outstanding Levantine cafe, with a menu spanning from craft coffee, tea, pitas, pastries, pizza, and softserve. It was even featured on Netflix’s show, ‘Somebody Feed Phil’.

Falafel Inc is an extremely affordable, but still delicious, takeout spot in the heart of Georgetown. You can get a meal as low as $4!

Good Stuff Eatery offers farm-fresh ingredients and delicious burgers and fries. It’s one of my favorite burger spots in the area (I prefer it over 7th Street Burger!).

Call Your Mother is a DMV classic for great bagels (if you’re from Jersey or New York, take this with a grain of salt). My favorite is their Sun City bagel with Pastrami!

These are just a few of my favorite things to do and places to go around campus. There is so much to explore in the DMV area and I hope this list helps you get started!
